In 2003, Nippon Ichi basically reinvented the tactical role playing genre with the release of Disgaea. In truth, they had put our SRPGs before this like, Rhapsody and La Pucelle, but Disgaea hit the zeitgeist and really brought the company into its own on both sides of the Pacific. Now, seven years later, Nippon Ichi hopes to do the same thing with rougelikes, which are pretty much the LEAST favourite type of RPG. Why is this? I’m not sure, but it could have something to do with the fact they tend to be the most challenging type of RPG as well, with their randomly generated dungeons, characters having to start from level one each time they enter and a whole host of punishment heaped up on the gamer should they die inside the dungeon.

Now publishers keep bringing roguelikes over, but they rarely get critical acclaim or much in the way of sales. Square-Enix has tried with Chocobo’s Dungeon, Atlus has tried with Baroque and Izuna, Natsume has given us Adventures to Go (which let you keep your levels at least), and so on but they just don’t get over with RPG fans. In fact the only two I can think of that have been true successes are Azure Dreams, which was published by Konami back in the PSX era and later ported to the original Game Boy, and the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon series, which manages to be the standard bearer for the genre in terms of being financially lucrative and accepted by critics and gamers alike. Of course, Nintendo never did bring over the WiiWare Trilogy of PMD games, which means they weren’t successful ENOUGH for NoA’s liking.

GTA: Chinatown Wars has very addictive gameplay. The weapon select screen makes, well… weapon selection easier. Weapon detailing is brilliant. Game mechanics are awesome. What really captivates you are THE mini-games, such as hotwiring cars, breaking locks and windshields of cars and assembling sniper-rifles. The player can use gas stations to assemble Molotov cocktails.

Even the new wanted system is pretty good. Now you need to slam cop cars to disable them and reduce your wanted-level. You can’t use a pay’n’spray in front of the cops but only when you are not in their sight.

Ammu-nation has gone online now! You get to order your weapons with your PDA and they’ll be at your doorstep. Also you can replay any mission by selecting it from a menu at the safehouse.

Other than whacking people on streets or completing story missions, there are a lot of ways of making money. A lot of new odd-jobs are available such as tattooing people or carrying out noodle-delivery missions. But the most fascinating

Chinatown Wars delivers some very memorable story missions, such as this one where we take down enemy choppers with molotov cocktails right over the Statue of Happiness.
way to make the quick buck is drug-dealing. Drug dealers are spread all around the city and trading is as easy as getting candy from the confectionery (or maybe even easier). You have to control the stock of drugs, buy them in one neighbourhood and sell them in another. If you are the lazy lucky type there are also scratch cards which can be purchased for winning weapons, money or eatables.

The graphics might not be all that great but there are the small details that help the game stand out. Lighting and particle effects are pretty good. The comic-book style cut-scenes give it an aesthetic appeal.

To sum it up, Chinatown Wars is a wonderful and entertaining game. It is the GTA for a portable console with missions designed for shorter periods of play and exciting gameplay.

Before playing the game, I had doubted if GTA: Chinatown Wars would deliver a good gaming experience; considering that the game lacks a full 3D rotational camera, 3D cut-scenes… but that was before playing the game. Still I think what could have been better was an improved camera with a clearer view. Another feature I missed was the voice-acting in the cut-scenes. Although the comic-book look was pleasant too, I couldn’t stop imagining Huang Lee talking in his Chinese accent.

The game starts off with the player as the main protagonist, called Tatsuya as the default name, and introduces us to his best friend, whose default name is Miki. The story kicks off with Tatsuya and Miki sitting on a bench. Tatsuya is too immersed in the game he is playing on his PSP to notice that Miki is missing. Kratos, Miki's dog, barks and shows Tatsuya where Miki is and thus he finds her unconscious on the ground, sick by some unknown illness. He wishes for her to become better, and suddenly, a voice magically appears and asks Tatsuya if he wants to save his friend and make her healthy again. He agrees and thus the adventure begins in an unknown land separated from the rest of the world in order to seize 5 different gems for the Traveler's Sword he holds so he can return to his own world and restore Miki back to good health.
The game is based on the Japanese novel Brave Story by Miyuki Miyabe, and features some of the original cast, although the main characters Tatsuya and Miki (as well as most of Tatsuya's party) are original creations for the game.
